ARTICLE 3 HISTORIC AREAS

12-3-73. Creation of Heritage Trust Commission; appointment and criteria for selection of members; terms of office; reimbursement of members for expenses; duties.

  1. There is created the Heritage Trust Commission. The commission shall be composed of 15 members, to be appointed by the Governor by July 31, 1975. The appointed members should represent a variety of interests and expertise, including, but not limited to, recreation, historic preservation, and the natural sciences, and should be selected so as to represent the broad geographic regions of the state. Five of the initial members were appointed for a term of office of one year and until their respective successors were duly appointed and qualified. Five of the initial members were appointed for a term of office of two years and until their respective successors were duly appointed and qualified. Five of the initial members were appointed for a term of office of three years and until their respective successors were duly appointed and qualified. Following the terms of the initial members, all successors shall be appointed for a term of three years and until their respective successors are duly appointed and qualified.
  2. The members of the commission shall receive no compensation for their services on the commission but shall be reimbursed for actual expenses incurred while discharging the duties imposed on them by this part.
  3. The commission shall serve as an advisory body to the Governor and to the board on all matters concerning the Heritage Trust Program and shall make recommendations to the board concerning the identification, designation, and acquisition of heritage areas; the dedication of heritage preserves; and the annual budget for the Heritage Trust Program. The board shall consider such recommendations before making its decision on these matters.
  4. The Heritage Trust Commission shall cease to exist on July 1, 1988, unless the General Assembly extends the life thereof. After July 1, 1988, or any later date set by the General Assembly for the expiration of the life of the Heritage Trust Commission, the functions thereof, as set forth in this part, shall be assumed and carried on by the board.
